Ukulele Explosion was an annual event held 2012-2014 at Kalama Intermediate School in Makawao and organized by Benny Uyetake, the school’s ukulele teacher. In the first year, Mele taught a ukulele workshop followed by performances by The Hawaiian Serenaders, Maui Ukulele Pops Band, and the Maui Ukulele Jazz Trio. In the second year, Mele taught a ukulele workshop and The Hawaiian Serenaders performed. In the last year, Mele attended the event for fun and not as a teacher/performer due to laryngitis. In addition, The Hawaiian Serenaders performed at the 1st Annual Sam’s Jam Masters Series at Iao Theater for 200+ people in 2012.

“There is ukulele education royalty in the house,” announced Benny Uyetake from the stage at Kalama Intermediate School Cafeteria on 17 May 2014. Benny introduced Mele to the audience (to applause) and explained why we were not participating in that year’s Ukulele Explosion. It’s always nice to be given recognition in the community.

Mele talked on radio with Joe Hawkins about the 1st Annual Ukulele Explosion, a fun, free, family event on Saturday, 24 March 2012 at Kalama Intermediate School (thanks to Benny Uyetake, the school’s ukulele teacher.

Mele was mentioned giving ukulele workshops and entertainment on this radio PSA about Sam’s Upcountry Jam and BBQ on Saturday, 17 May 2014 at Kalama Intermediate School (thanks to Benny Uyetake, the school’s ukulele teacher).
