Sing-Along 2018

Reviews of Sing-Along with Mele Fong series

Sing-Along with Mele Fong

Twenty-three people signed up for May 2018 Sing-Along.

Mele offered 11 sing-along classes at Kaunoa in 2018. The format consisted of projecting the song lyrics and ‘ukulele chords from Mele’s computer PowerPoint presentation onto the large screen at the front of the room (similar to sing-along with Mitch Miller) for easy viewing by singers and ‘ukulele players. Three new features to the PowerPoint presentation were added in January: a “new look,” “Hawaiian History Moment of the Month” slide, and “strum graphic” slide to show the name of the ‘ukulele strum along with ‘ukulele chord shapes. In September, Mele and Rich’s new wireless headsets and wireless instrument pickups were connected to Kaunoa’s PA system so that Mele could sing and play ‘ukulele and move around freely without being connected to cables and Rich could be heard singing in harmony and playing his u-bass from wherever he sat.

The most popular class in 2018 was Hawaiian Party Songs with 30 people.

The total signups for 2018 was 269 people for 11 classes including 37 people for the 6th Annual Christmas Party where a sing-along of Christmas Songs was part of the program. (I was serving on federal jury duty in November on Oahu and could not offer a sing-along class that month.)

TESTIMONIALS

“I’m going to extend my vacation on Maui just so I can complete your ukulele class,” said Patricia Hans from New York whom we first met at my February 10 Ukulele Strumming Workshop at Kaunoa. At the workshop Patricia told me she had signed up for my Ukulele Strumming 101 class from February 12 – March 12 at Kaunoa. Patricia’s original travel plans had her leaving Maui before class ended, but after experiencing how much fun it is to learn to play ukulele from me, she chose to extend her trip. What a great testimonial! – Paniolo Songs, 22 February 2018.

“I’ll be back and I’ll bring my friends,” commented a first time participant after the program. – Flower and Lei Songs, 3 May 2018.

“During this time of not feeling good about the direction our country is going, it felt so good to sing uplifting songs – to be proud to be an American,” commented a participant. “I haven’t sung these songs since elementary school,” commented another. – Patriotic Songs, 19 July 2018.

“You are the highlight of my month,” commented a participant. – Pop Songs of the 50s and 60s, 6 September 2018.
